The history of the East Caribbean Dollar.
The East Caribbean Dollar is the currency of eight countries in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts, and Nevis, Saint Luca, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. British Overseas Territories is the only exception in this association since it had circulated its currency.
Before the East Caribbean Dollar started circulating, the British West Indies dollar (BWI) was in circulation. However, many members of OECS refused to take in the BWI, so it was no longer in use. In 1965, the new currency called Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC) was found by the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority.
The first banknote series was issued in 1965 and the denominations are available at 1, 5, 20, and 100 dollars. These banknotes featured the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
On Oct 1, 1985, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank was established. Its first denomination was issued in the same year with the contribution of the 10$ notes.
On Apr 1, 2008, the third banknote series was issued and available at $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The front side only featured the image of Queen Elizabeth II, turtle and fish, and the hummingbird. On the reverse side, there are important scenes from each member, the map of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and tropical fishes.
The fourth banknote series was issued in 2012 with the Braille symbols which could help lost-vision people determine banknotes. There are 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars in circulation. Specially, all features and designs were kept identical.
The fifth banknote series was issued in 2019 with the reintroduction of the 5 dollar notes. This series is the biggest step when it was shown vertically and using polymer material. There were only the $5 and $20 changes on the reverse side. More texture and complexity were combined and added for this series aiming to prevent counterfeiting.
