Sri Lanka is an island country located in South Asia. It borders the Bay of Bengal in the southwest, the Arabian Sea in the southeast. The total area of Sri Lanka is 25,330 square miles. Sri Jayawardenepura is the legislative capital and Combo is the largest city also a financial center. The official languages in Sri Lanka are Sinhala and Tami.
The history of the Sri Lankan rupee banknotes
In 1825, the British pound (GBP) was introduced as the official currency in Sri Lanka. The banknote denominations in the pound were issued later in 1827 by the Treasury to replace the Ceylonese Rixdollar. Later on, in 1831, the effects of the Rix dollar were demonetized.
On 26 September 1836, the British colonized the Indian Rupee as the official currency in Sri Lanka. This currency was in circulation along with the British pound. However, only the rupee was used in payment. Based on that money, in 1869, the Sri Lanka government introduced the Rupee (LKR) as its new official currency. And it became legal tender of Sri Lanka in just only three years. Quickly, the British pound was replaced on 1 January 1872.
The first rupee banknote denominations were introduced in 1885 by the Government of Ceylon. The 5 rupees notes in 1885, 10 rupees notes in 1894, and 1 000 rupees notes in 1899.
In 1917, banknotes with Khomeini’s portrait were introduced with 1, 2, 50, and 100 rupees notes.
In 1941, the banknote denominations were introduced into two issues. The first issuance had issued only 1, 2, 5, 10 rupees banknotes. The second issuance had existed from 1 rupee notes to 10 000 rupees notes.
The central bank of Sri Lanka had introduced a banknote denomination of 20 rupees, 500 rupees, and 1 000 rupees since 1977. In 1988, the 200 rupees banknotes were issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence, this is also the first banknote printed in Sri Lanka.
