4 products
Showing 1 - 4 of 4 products
In 1896, the new series of Silver Certificate was released by the U.S Treasury. This third issue consisted of three denominations $1, $2, $5. They feature allegorical images relating to American history and advances in technology which made them famous with the nickname “Educational Series” and all of the notes from this issue bearing “Educational Note”.
The 1896 $1 “Educational” Silver Certificate is often considered to be the most beautiful and most artistically designed U.S. Paper Money. From the obverse, it depicted the “History Instructing Youth” when a goddess and her pupil are standing on the Lee House in Washington, DC. Aside from depictions of the Washington Monument and Capitol Building, the right side of the bill features the United States Constitution. Furthermore, the names of 23 great contributors to the American story are printed in wreaths around the front of the bill. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Fulton, and Ulysses Grant are among those mentioned. The majority of the persons were chosen for their creative, cultural, or scientific achievements. The blue serial numbers was repeated twice along with the red treasury seal on the right side.
From the reverse, there is a combination of an intricate pattern design and the two portraits of Martha and George Washington. There are only two combination signature for the $1 Educational Note which is Fr.224 and Fr.225.
In 1893, The Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) has engaged three famous prominent mural painters for $800 for each approved design, which is why the $1 "Education Note" in this series looks so attractive. Because of the intricate design, the $1 bill and other bills were rendered inoperable by the lathe machine tool. This was finally the only series in U.S Paper Money that did not necessitate the use of a lathe machine tool.
All of the notes from the series of 1896 “Educational” Silver Certificate were recognized as some of the most attractive notes in American history and is highly appreciated by collectors in terms of design. In the book of the 100 Greatest Currency Notes, the $1 "Educational Note" was ranked seventh.
