The 1917 $2 Legal Tender Note was issued during a period of great change in US paper money production, which is an interesting historical fact. At 7.375 inches by 3.125 inches, they are much larger than modern-day currency. This size was common for American Paper Money during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but it was phased out in the 1920s as the country shifted to smaller, more standardized bills.
On the left side of the 1917 $2's obverse was a depiction of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. The presidential portrait shared the design with the vignette of the United States Capitol Building centered. This is the old Capital Building at that time. President Jefferson's portrait also displayed on the $2 bill dates back to 1869 on the $2 “Rainbow Note” and continues to the present day.
