Serial numbers on currency are generally referred to as “fancy” serial numbers - or Special serial numbers by currency collectors. The notes carry any kind of fancy serial number listed below that might bring some premium than the face value.
Nowadays, US currency is being printed at two factories located in Fort Worth, Texas, and Washington, DC operated by BEP (BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING). The modern US Currency serial numbers have eight digits. The prefix might have two-letters on the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 denomination and one-letter on the $1, $2 denomination. The suffix usually ends by a letter, sometimes it would be a "Star" meaning that notes that serve as replacements during the production process.
Here below is how to identify serial numbers that are considered as "Fancy" or Special. This list is judged by subjective personal criteria, fancy serial numbers are sorted in descending order of value.
0. Low serial number (Serial number 1 - 9).

Some people collect the super repeater serial numbers based on the last two digits of their birth year, special anniversary day... Another also tend to collect serial number ones on one dollar bills, serial number two on two dollar bills. If the serial numbers on the dollar bill begins or ends with a star symbol that the note will likely have some additional value especially for rare denominations $2 and $50.
