Creation of the "History Instructing Youth" Design on 1896 $1 Silver Certificate
In 1893, The Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) has engaged three famous prominent mural painters for $800 for each approved design. William H. Low was the first artist to be hired by the BEP. He was a New York City-based artist who was well-known for his murals depicting scenes from American history. His contributions to the $1 Educational Silver Certificate included designing the central figure of the goddess, who represents "History Instructing Youth" on the obverse side of the note.
Which is why the $1 "Education Note" in this series looks so attractive. Because of the intricate design, the $1 bill and other bills were rendered inoperable by the lathe machine tool. This was finally the only series in U.S Paper Money that did not necessitate the use of a lathe machine tool.
