In April 10th 1901, U.S. Treasury introduced the new series of 1901 $10 as Legal Tender Note. The 1901 $10 Legal Tender Note was the only denomination released from the fifth issue of the United States Note as large-size paper money. This note was particularly known by the nickname "Bison Note" or the "Buffalo Bill" among the collector's community.
The Front And Back Of The 1901 $10 Legal Tender Note "Bison"
The 1901 $10 Ten Dollars Bill "Bison" featured a big American bison in the center along with the two famous explorers' portraits of the Westward Expansion, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The drawing bison shows the wild beast in its native environment on the American Plains. Many people accidentally thought the "Bison Note" was inspired by the Black Diamond bison that was used in the Buffalo nickel from 1913 to 1938. In fact, the animal drawn on the "Bison Note" Series of 1901 is the National Zoological Park Bison No. 2926 from the Yellowstone National Park, the very first national park in the United States.
Along with the image of the Bison, the denomination is engraved with "X" and "TEN" on the left-hand side, and the US Treasury seal on the right side, both were printed in red ink. The red serial numbers was repeated twice on the upper right and lower left side. The denomination of the note was also highly stylized by numeral at the four corners.
The reverse of the 1901 $10 Bison featurering the vignette Columbia, the historic female personification of the United States. This feminine metaphor was initially connected with the New World in 16th-century European artwork when referring to the untamed territories discovered in the New World. There are nine varieties of signature combinations for the 1901 $10 "Buffalo Bill".
This popular but extremely uncommon at higher condition collectible note, issued from 1901 to 1925, honors the United States government's dedication to frontier civilization at the start of the nineteenth century. The 1901 $10 "Bison Note" is one of the collector's most sought notes because of its classic, imagery as a piece of Americana and highly ranked at 6th on the list of the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes.
In terms of rarity, the $10 1901 Legal Tender Note Bison Note is considered a collector's item, and in good condition, these notes can fetch high prices at auction.
