The $50 gold certificates were issued in 1922. These large-size notes were redeemable in gold coins and were the third denomination to be issued in the series of 1922. They were also the last large-size $50 gold certificates issued before it was shrunk to the small size.

The front design of the $50 gold certificate is both simple and elegant. The print design on the earlier-issued $50 gold certificate from 1913 is very similar to this one. At the center of the note is a portrait of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, surrounded by decorative patterns. The denomination is printed in numerical form in all four corners of the note, making it easily recognizable.

The $50 gold certificate apart from other currency is the eye-catching serial number and seal printed in vivid yellow ink. The serial number is repeated twice, in the lower left and upper right, while the seal is located on the left side. Along with the serial number and seal, the left side also features a giant numerical fifty, indicating the denomination.

There is only one combination signature: Speelman and White Fr.2200. However, there are two varieties of serial numbers: large and small. The small serial number is considered scarcer and more valuable to collectors than the large one.

The back of the note is a radiant orange-gold color, which was a signature design for every denomination from the large-size gold certificate series. This unique design adds to the note's appeal and sets it apart from other U.S. currency.
