The history of the Manat.
Manat has been the official currency in Azerbaijan since 1919 with the currency code is AZN. Its name is derived from a word of Latin called “Moneta” which is a goddess of memory in Latin mythology. It had replaced the old Transcaucasian ruble. Three Manat series denominations were issued.
The first banknote series was issued in 1919 by the Azerbaijani Socialist Republic. Only banknote series were issued which included 5, 100, 1 000, 5 000, 10 000, 25 000, 50 000, 100 000, 250 000, 1 000 000, and 5 000 000 manat notes.
The second banknote series was issued on 15 August 1992. As the flop of the manat series at the end of 2005, about 4591 manat notes equaled 1 dollar. It was predictably dropped in the same year and was replaced by another new banknote denomination in 2006. The banknotes were available at 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1 000, 10 000, and 50 000 manat notes. The first three of them featured the Maiden Tower of Baku.
The third banknote series was issued on 1 January 2006. To keep the transition easy, both old and new series denominations were remaining the same. The banknote is available at 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 manat notes. Interestingly, both banknotes in Russia and Azerbaijan were designed by Robert Kalina from Australia. Therefore, they are found to be similar to each other. On the facade, these were designed with different types of themes such as history on the 10 manat notes, writing and literature in the 5 manat notes. On the reserved side, each was designed with a small picture of Azerbaijan country.
The latest banknote-200 manat denominations were issued in 2018 to commemorate Heydar Aliyev who is the third president of Azerbaijan and his 95th birthday.
