The history of the Bahamian Dollar.
In 1966, The Bahamas government decided to stop relying on British pounds, hence the first national currency of The Bahamas was introduced-the Bahamian Dollar (BSD). It has equal value to the US dollar.
The first banknote series was introduced in denominations of ½, 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars. Two years later, these banknotes were reintroduced by another authority in the same denominations. After gaining independence, the Central Bank of The Bahamas was established in 1974 and acted as the only authority that printed money for this country at that point. The next issuance did not include the ½ and 3 dollars, however, they were reissued in 1984. Interestingly, all of these series were issued with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II until 1992 when the portrait of The Bahamas politicians had been replaced.
In 2005, the CRISP (Counterfeit Resistant Integrated Security Product.) series was introduced to prevent counterfeiting. The denominations were available at ½, 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars. Featuring the signature of the Governor along with the words “The Central Bank of Bahamas.”. Queen Elizabeth II was re-display on the 3, 10, and 100 dollars.
In 2016, the latest series was introduced and called the CRISP Evolution. Remaining the same features from the last one except for more security and the order of colors. The denomination is available at ½, 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 dollars.
