Ethiopia is a landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa in the east of this continent. The total area of Ethiopia is about 420,000 square miles. Ethiopia is the 13th most populous country in the world. Its capital and largest city is Addis Ababa. Because of its size, Ethiopia has a total of 5 official languages including Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali, and Afar. in further, Ethiopia contained more than 80 ethnic groups. Ethiopia had existed for 2 000 years which makes it become one of the oldest countries in the world.

The history of Ethiopian Birr.

The Birr is the currency in circulation of Ethiopia with the currency code is ETB by the National bank of Ethiopia. The word Birr is derived from thaler which means silver. Firstly, it was salt blocks known as amole tchew as well as the Maria Theresa Thaler (MTT) which is a silver coin as currency in Ethiopia regimes from 1741. And became the standard unit currency of Ethiopia in 1893. The first Ethiopian Birr was minted in 1894 in Paris as a present for the former of Ethiopia, Emperor Menelik II. In 1915, the Bank of Abyssinia started importing banknotes instead of coins for trading. The denomination was available which are 5, 10, 100, and 500 talari.

However, in 1936, Ethiopia was occupied by Italian colonies. They aimed to turn Ethiopia to Italian East Africa, which led to the creation of Italian Lira in 1936. During WWII, the Britain forces brought over the East African Shilling and became the legal tender on 1 July 1942 until 1945 when the war was ended.

The second Birr was re-established in 1945 after the war. Birr was declared as the official call of their currency in all languages. The second Birr banknote denomination was issued 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 birrs. The new denomination of Ethiopia Birr was issued on September 10, 2020.
