The Gambia is a country located in West Asia. It is considered the smallest country in the Africa region with only 4,127 square miles. The capital city of The Gambia is Banjul and the largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama. English is the official language of The Gambia after 200 years under the British Empire’s control. Dalasi is the current currency in The Gambia.

The history of the Dalasi.

The Dalasi (GMD) was selected in 1971 and replaced the Gambia pound. It firstly was introduced only in coin denominations. The first banknote denomination of the Dalasi is clueless when it was created. These banknotes were included at 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, and 200 dalasis notes.

The current banknotes were in circulation in 1996. Many designs were added and changed over time. The Dalasi banknotes were called differently for each series. Such as the banknote of Dalasi in 2015 established by the Central Bank of The Gambia, was nicknamed “Yahya Jammeh”. Because these banknotes mainly featured a portrait of Gambia’s President, Yahya Jammeh on the facade. However, his photo was removed in February 2018, and replaced with a signature combination. As well as the next series in June 2019, this series was designed “the coat of arms of the Gambia” and the birds of the Africa region. Therefore, it was called the “Bird” series. The order of colors was also kept from the last Dalasi.
