The history of the Ghanaian Cedi.
After declaring independence from the British Empire, Ghana no longer uses the British West African pound. The Ghanaian pound was introduced as the first nation’s currency after independence. However, in 1965, the first president of Ghana-Kwame Nkrumah-had decided to switch from the British money system to the standard decimal system. Consequently, the current currency of Ghana which is Cedi was introduced.
The first Cedi denomination was established by the Bank of Ghana including 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 1 000 cedis. These banknotes all featured the portrait of Kwame Nkrumah on the front except the largest denomination with the flag of Ghana-the Black Star. Due to the political movement of the Ghana government, the first Cedi series was abolished to remove Kwame Nkrumah’s portrait.
The new Cedi banknote series (1967-2007) was introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10 cedis at first. In 1972, the second new Cedi series was introduced with the new denomination of the 2 cedis. The third new Cedi series was introduced in 1979. The denomination was available at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cedis. As a result of inflation, large denominations were added, and the three smallest denominations were unseen in the latest series of new Cedi.
In the current series, the government has decided to abolish large-denomination banknotes. It wasn’t officially called the Third Cedi, but instead the Ghanian Cedi. The denomination was available at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 cedis. Its features have the reappearance of Kwame Nkrumah, and the rest were featured The Big Six, Independence Arch.
