Indonesia is a country located in Southeast Asia and also Oceania in the middle of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Indonesia is the island’s largest country in the world and the fourth largest country in the world with 735,358 square miles. Jakarta is the capital and the largest city in Indonesia. Indonesian is the official language in Indonesia, also over 700 other languages.
The history of the Indonesian Rupiah Banknotes.
The Indonesian rupiah (IDR) was first introduced on 3 October 1946 by the Indonesian nationalist in Java. Meanwhile, the Dutch still printing the gulden currency. Therefore, there were two currencies were in circulation in Indonesia at that time. However, the independence of Indonesia was recognized by the Dutch colonization in November 1949. The Javasche Bank owned by the Dutch colonize was then agreed to be restored as the Central bank of Indonesia. In June 1950, 5 and 10 rupiah notes were introduced, but it was quickly canceled.
Due to the spiraling inflation in Indonesia, 100 rupiahs notes was the highest denomination banknotes had increased to 1 000 rupiahs notes in May 1960, followed by 5 000 rupiahs notes in 1963 and 10 000 rupiahs notes in 1964.
On 13 December 1965, the new rupiah was introduced at 1 sen, 100 rupiahs, followed by 500 and 1 000 rupiahs notes were added not long after.
In 1970, 5 000 rupiahs and 10 000 rupiahs notes were added into circulation.
In 1992, 20 000 rupiahs notes were contributed to the banknote denomination. Due to the Asian Financial Crisis during 1997-1998, the rupiahs currency was reduced by over 80% in few months. However, the government didn’t take an act except redesigning the 10 000 and 20 000 rupiahs notes.
Ultimately, by 1999, 100 000 rupiahs notes were added into circulation. On 19 December 2016, all the available rupiah banknotes were redesigned. The new text called “Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia” literally means the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. On the facade were featured the portrait of Indonesia nation heroes and types of vegetals as Indonesian symbols on the reversed side.
The latest denomination was added on 17 August 2020 in 75 000 rupiahs notes. With portraits of Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta in the front along with children with traditional clothing of Indonesia at the backside.
