Jersey is a self-governing island of the British Crown Dependency. It is located in a close range of northwest France. The total area of Jersey is only 45.6 square miles. Saint Heiler is the capital and also the largest parish. English, French, and Jerriais are three official languages in Jersey. The Jersey Pound is the current unit of currency in this country.
The history of the Jersey pound.
Jersey shared the same currency with the United Kingdom which is the Pound. The Jersey Pound (JEP) was found in 1834 and aiming to replace the livre that was in circulation at that time. Pointedly, it is not a separate note, however, it was allowed to circulate in both banknote and coin denominations by the State of Jersey, same with Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The first Jersey pound banknote series was introduced in 1797 by Hugh Godfray also opened the first bank in Jersey. The £1 was the only banknote in circulation due to the creation of the individual’s banknotes. However, £5 was made at least.
In 1963, the 10 shillings, and 1, 5, 10 pounds were in circulation under the Currency Notes Law 1959. These banknotes featured the portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Soon, the 10 shillings were replaced as a result of small use.
New denominations were added in the 1976 series. It was available at 1, 5, 10, 20 pounds featuring the new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The 1989 issue was in circulation with the introduction of a new denomination of 50 pounds. Stillness, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth was chosen to be displayed in this series.
To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey, the 1 pound was featured with the LJ meaning “Liberation of Jersey '' and also a Jersey’s map. In 2004, in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Dutch of Normandy, the 1 pound was featured in the Mont Orgueil castle.
On 29 April 2010, the newest pound banknote series was introduced, the denominations are available at 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 pounds. These banknotes are featured in 3 languages including English, French, and Jerriais. Of course, all of them were featured with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Jersey monuments on the facade. The reverse side depicted the images of the coastal defense tower in Jersey such as Le Hocq tower on the 1 pound. In 2012, £100 was chosen to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
