The capital city of Morocco is Rabat and its largest city Casablanca. Arabic and Berber are the official languages in Morocco.
The history of the Moroccan Dirham Banknotes.
The Dirham (MAD) was the official currency of Morocco since 1882. The term “dirham” comes from the drachma, a currency of the Greek. Its first banknote denomination was at 50 and 100 dirhams notes. In 1912, Morocco became a French protectorate. As a result, the whole country switched to using Moroccan Franc for nearly 50 years. In 1960, Moroccon declared independence from France. The Dirham was reintroduced on 16 October 1960. However, the Franc was still in circulation until 1974 when the Santim replaced the Francs.
In 1965, the new denomination of Dirham banknotes was introduced at 5, 10, and 50 dirhams notes. In 1970, 100 dirhams notes were issued. In 1991, 200 dirhams notes were introduced. Followed by 20 dirhams notes in 1996.
In October 2009, the Bank Al-Maghrib had introduced 4 million copies of 50 dirhams banknotes as an honor of the 50th anniversary of the bank. In December 2012, 25 dirhams banknotes were issued to celebrate the 25th anniversary of banknote production.
In 2013, the banknote denomination was redesigned. With a portrait of King Mohammed VI on the facade. And the artifacts represent the richness and the culture of Moroccan.
In 2019, 20 dirhams notes by the Bank Al-Maghrib were printed on the polymer material to commemorate 20 years of the king Mohammed VI remained on his throne.
