As well as many countries, after passing the Decimal Currency Act in 1964. At first, the “fern”, “kiwi”, and “zeal” were chosen to not be confused with the “dollar”. Lastly, the “dollar” still was picked. On July 10, 1967, the New Zealand (NZD) dollar was introduced to the public.
The first New Zealand Dollar banknote series was introduced in 1967 with the available denominations at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 100 dollars. The facade of each banknote features Queen Elizabeth II and a watermark of Captain Cook. Also, there are New Zealand birds and plants on the opposite side.
The second New Zealand Dollar banknote series was introduced in late 1981. This series was changed to another printer company, hence there are some minor changes on these banknotes. Such as the artworks and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II now look forward, rather than to the left. In 1990, the $10 notes were chosen to commemorate 150 years of the Treaty of Waitangi. Later, the $1 and $2 became devalued and replaced by coins.
The third New Zealand Dollar banknote series was introduced in 1992. All of the banknotes were re-designed completely. Such as the images of Queen Elizabeth II were replaced with the noble New Zealanders’ images except the $20 notes which still featured our Queen. The reverse side featured scenes in New Zealand.
The fourth New Zealand Dollar banknote series was introduced in 1999. This time, polymer material was in charge. More security designs were added to avoid counterfeiting. There was one special edition of the $10 notes to commemorate the millennium in New Zealand. However, all the notes circulated were withdrawn in 2002.
The fifth New Zealand Dollar banknote series was introduced in 2015. There are new introductions of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 notes. The Reversed Bank of New Zealand referred to this series as the “Brighter Money” series. Despite many changes, Queen Elizabeth remained stably on the $20 notes, and watermark on all the denominations.
