Sierra Leone is a country that lies on the southeast west coast of West Africa. Its area is 27,700 square miles. Freetown is the capital, also the biggest city in this country. The official language of Sierra Leone is English. Sierra Leona is a special presence in the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Also, the country suffered a long period of brutal civil war until 2002.

The history of Sierra Leonean Leone.

The Leone (SLL) is the official currency of Sierra Leone. It was first introduced on 4 August 1964 and replaced the British West African pounds after gaining independence from Britain in 1961. Following the establishment of decimal currency in 1964, the Bank of Sierra Leone had established the new series of banknote simply called shillings.

The 1, 2, 5 Leone banknotes were available with multiple color decorations. These notes featured an image of the Law Court Building and various living days of Sierra citizens on the backside. In 1979, the 50 cents notes were created with the portrait of the second president, Joseph Saidu Momoh, but it was stopped printing. In 1980, the 10 leones notes were introduced and either the 20 leones notes in 1982. During 1974-1991, those notes were changed to the portrait of the head of the country. Such as the president Siaka Steven on the new denomination 1, 2, 5 Leone banknotes.

In 1988, the 100 leones banknotes were introduced, 500 leones in 1991, 1 000 and 5 000 leones in 1993, 2 000 leones in 2000 and lastly 10 000 leones in 2004.

Subsequently, in June 2010, the Sierra Leone government issued a new denomination of banknotes which are smaller, more security and durable 1 000, 2 000, 5 000, 10 000 leones notes. With famous people on it observe except the 10 000 leones notes with a dove flying over the Sierra Leone map.
