The information about this country.
The Solomon Islands is a sovereign island that lies east of Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. It compromised six chains of islands and more than 900 small islands in the Oceanian continent. The total area of the Solomon Islands is 11,000 square miles. Honiara is the capital and the largest city. English is its official language. The Solomon Island Dollar is the current unit of currency.
The history of the Solomon Island Dollar.
Before the creation of the Solomon Island Dollar (SBD), this chain of islands was using the Australian pound sterling. However, it had established its own currency but was replaced by the Ocean Pound or known as Japanese Invasion Currency during WWII. Until 1966, the Australian Dollar (AUD) was introduced and in circulation until the Solomon Islands gained independence in 1976 and established its own currency a year later.
On Oct 24, 1977, the first Solomon Island Dollar banknote series was introduced and available in 2, 5, 10, 20 dollars denominations. Obviously, these banknotes featured the images of Queen Elizabeth II. Nevertheless, the later serieses were issued with the national crest only. In 1986, the SBD started losing its value while in relation with the AUD, so larger denomination banknotes were introduced such as the $50, followed by the $100 notes in 2006.
In 2001, the first polymer banknotes series was introduced. However, it was replaced by the cotton fiber series in 2006. The current series are available in denominations at 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars. Designs were upgraded to avoid counterfeiting including brighter colors, micro printing, security thread, and tapered serial numbers. These banknotes have commons in the Coat of arms of Solomon Islands on the facade and the image of the life of sea in these islands.
