This listing is for sale ONE note ONLY. The scanned image displayed the front and back of the exact note you will receive.
The 1886 $1 Silver Certificate featuring Martha Washington is a highly collectible piece of U.S. currency. It holds historical significance as one of the earliest U.S. notes to feature a woman on the obverse.
The portrait of Martha Washington, the wife of George Washington, is prominently displayed on the left side. This makes her the first and only woman (to date) to appear on a U.S. paper note.
The reverse is dominated by an extremely detailed, symmetrical pattern of scrollwork, flourishes, and geometric shapes, giving it the nickname “Ornate Back”. The Ornate Back design was later replaced with a more simplified version in the 1891 series, making the 1886 note even more desirable for collectors.
This particular note is designated as Friedberg #217, bearing the signatures of Rosecrans & Hyatt and a large brown seal. The note, graded by PMG, has been deemed a Choice AU 58 EPQ.
