Prior to 1929, all U.S. paper money was printed and released as large-size notes, with the most breathtaking, artistically-created themes, designs, and historical events of all U.S. paper currency. Because of their distinctive engraved and significant design elements, they are highly sought after by collectors all over the world.

The Sizing of U.S. Large-Size Paper Money

The sizing of large-size paper money was unique and different from the currency notes we use today. The size of these notes ranged from approximately 7 3/8 inches by 3 1/8. The size of these notes was larger 30% than the currency notes we use today, which measure approximately 6.14 inches by 2.61 inches.

A Comparison of Sizing Between The Two Types of Currency

The larger size of these notes allowed for more intricate designs, illustrations, and portraits. The elaborate designs on large-size notes are regarded as some of the greatest engravings. Only those who have observed a large-size note closely may completely appreciate the incredible artistry of these outstanding 19th-century engravers. In terms of art, they are really masterpieces.

The Historical Significance of U.S. Large-Size Currency

Large-size dollar bill was a significant development in the evolution of currency and played a critical role in shaping the country's economic history. Large-size paper money of the United States went through several design changes and issued by different federal agencies. The designs of these notes were often a reflection of the cultural climate of the time. Here are some of the types of large-size paper money that the United States government issued:

  1. Demand Notes: The first large-size paper money notes were issued in 1861 by the government to finance the Civil War. These notes were known as Demand Notes and were redeemable in gold or silver coins.
  2. Legal Tender Notes: In 1862, the government introduced Legal Tender Notes, which were not backed by precious metals but were declared legal tender for all debts, public and private. These notes were the first federal paper currency notes that could be circulated as legal tender.
  3. Compound Interest Notes: These notes were issued in 1863 and were a form of interest-bearing currency. They were redeemable after three years and were meant to finance the Civil War.
  4. Interest Bearing Notes: These notes were issued from 1861 to 1865 and were similar to Compound Interest Treasury Notes. They were redeemable after three years and paid interest every six months.
  5. National Bank Notes: These notes were issued by banks that were members of the National Banking System. They were backed by the United States government and were a form of legal tender.
  6. Treasury Notes: These notes were issued under the series of 1890 and 1891 and were backed by precious metal.
  7. Gold Certificates: The first large-size was debuted with the series of 1882.
  8. Silver Certificates: Spans the length of U.S. history, The first large-size silver certificates were issued from 1878. The type of silver certificates varied in design, and color making them one of the most fascinating and favorite designs ever among the numismatic community and also all types of U.S Paper Money.
  9. Federal Reserve Notes: The first series of Federal Reserve Notes were issued in 1914 as large-size paper money and consisted of five denominations $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 featured the centered portrait on the obverse.

The first federal large-size paper money was first issued during the Civil War with the debut of Demand Notes consited of three denominations which are $5, $10, $20. The $1 Silver Certificate series of 1923 with the numismatic nickname "Horse blanket" was the last large-size note ever printed also the end of the period for the large-size bills. The surviving population of early large-size U.S. Paper Money is much smaller than for U.S. coins and considered by many to be more attractive and distinctive, given their large size, vibrant colors, and great variety.
