The $10 series of 1923 legal tender note, commonly known as the "Poker Chip," is a highly distinctive and sought-after piece of American currency. This note, printed during the twilight years of large-size notes, is ranked #46 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers and David M. Sundman.
The obverse of the note features a portrait of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, prominently displayed in the center. Flanking Jackson’s portrait are a distinctive scalloped red Treasury Seal, a Roman numeral X denomination counter and the red serial numbers.
The nickname "Poker Chip" comes from the note’s reverse design. Unlike other notes named for their front design elements, the "Poker Chip" earns its moniker from the back. The reverse features ample blank space, a trend of that era, with denomination counters on the left and right that resemble poker chips, drawing immediate attention from viewers.
This lightly circulated piece was evaluated by PMG and came in at a VF 25. It has a small stain and paper pulls, as mentioned by the evaluator. However, the note maintains its vibrant cherry red overprint and bright paper color. Although the listed imperfections may slightly impact its value, we have priced it fairly for its grade. It would make a great addition for anyone looking to add one to their collection.
