The Fr.1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate, often referred to collectors as "The King of Silvers". The note bearing Julian/Woodin signature combination. W.A. Julian served as the Treasurer of the United States, while W.H. Woodin was the Secretary of the Treasury at the time these certificates were issued. The series was notably short-lived, with the retirement of Woodin and changes in silver policy leading to a limited distribution. This has contributed to the note's status as a "one-year type,"
While most silver certificates included the statement "in silver payable to the bearer on demand," the 1933 $10 Silver Certificate's clause stated "payable in silver coin to the bearer on demand."
This note was printed exclusively in Washington D.C. Unlike typical currency circulation methods, the 1933 $10 Silver Certificates were only released through the treasury counter in Washington D.C. This highly unusual distribution method meant that the notes were not sent to various banks across the country as is standard practice. Instead, individuals had to obtain them directly from the treasury. This unique approach to distribution lasted for a brief period of eight months, after which no more notes were issued in this manner.
The original print run of the 1933 $10 Silver Certificate was limited to 216,000 notes. However, records suggest that a significant portion of these notes, approximately 60,000, were destroyed, leaving an estimated 156,000 notes actually released. Today, the number of surviving notes is a mere fraction of this figure, with only about 80 examples recorded in the census, underscoring the note's extreme rarity.
This particular note was graded VF 30 by PMG. The paper quality and inking remain original. As confirmed by our review of the auction house's notes. This one may have better centering compared to other examples.
While the some of the high graded examples were sold over $25k. For those looking to complete their collection, this moderately circulated note may be the ideal choice.
