The 1862 $1 Legal Tender Note holds a significant place in U.S. currency history as the first paper money issued by the federal government under the Legal Tender Act of 1862, created to finance the Civil War. It features Salmon P. Chase, Lincoln’s Treasury Secretary, and marks the introduction of fiat currency—money backed by the government’s credit rather than precious metals. The note’s front showcases detailed engravings, red serial numbers, and a small red Treasury seal, while the back is fully green, inspiring the nickname “Greenback.”
This note showcases strong, vivid inking and original paper surface. PMG graded AU 58 EPQ with STAR desigination. Among the 543 Fr.17a notes graded by PMG, this particular piece is the only one example with the STAR distinction.
There is only a tiny corner fold at the top right corner which prevents this one from being Choice UNC.
