The History Of Vietnam Banknotes
The Vietnamese Dong (VND) was established as the national currency of Vietnam on May 3, 1978, by the State bank of Vietnam. It was first introduced in North Vietnam to replace the piastra of the French Indochina. After the fall of Saigon, Vietnam was reunified and became one. As a result, the currency in South Vietnam was changed to a “liberation dong”. The word “dong” comes from the term “đồng tiền" which means money. This word is a loanword from the Chinese. It was used as an old currency during the dynastic periods of China and Vietnam.
The Vietnamese Dong (VND; symbol: ₫) is the official currency of Vietnam. There seems to be a lot of denominations in Vietnam, and the most commonly used are:1000 VND, 2000 VND, 5000 VND, 10 000 VND, 20 000 VND, 50 000 VND, 100 000 VND, 200 000 VND and 500 000 Vietnamese Dong. Since polymer money was put into use starting in 2003, now only paper notes with a value of VND 1,000, VND 2,000, and VND 5,000 are still valid in Vietnam.
