The history of the Belize Dollar.
Before independence, Belize had been using many currencies such as British Honduras Dollar, British Pound, and Spanish Dollar. The Belize Dollar (ZBD) was officially released on Jan 1, 1974. From 1840 Belize became one of the British colonies until 1981, Belize finally became an independent country.
The first banknote series was introduced before the Belize Dollar was recognized. In 1894, the denominations of dollars were available at 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 dollars. However, at that point, Belize had not been named Belize yet. After renaming in 1973, a new banknote series was introduced that had the name Belize on it.
On Nov 1, 2016, the Money Authority of Belize was found, hence, they took over money production. However, only the banknote series was in circulation due to the establishment of the Central Bank of Belize in 1982. Their first denominations were available at 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 dollars.
