The history of the Colombian Peso.
The first Colombian Peso (COP) was issued in 1810 and was aiming to replace the Spanish Real.
The first banknote series was introduced by 5 provinces of Colombia in 1857 including Boliver, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Panama, and Santander. The denominations were only available at 10 and 50 pesos. In the 1860s, notes with the denomination from 1 peso to 25 pesos were added.
After 1888, the Peso started losing its value. Therefore, large denomination notes were added gradually such as 1 000 pesos in 1895, 500 pesos in 1900.
In 1904, the new authority called the Treasury took over money-making. All the denominations were kept the same as the previous one. In 1923, the Bank of the Republic acquired money-making and started introducing banknote denominations in Peso Oro. These banknotes were available at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 10 000 pesos oro.
Over time, small-denomination banknotes were stopped printing. Even in 1993, the “Oro” was removed. In 2006, the notes were decreased in size due to the heavy use.
In 2016, the Bank of the Republic introduced new series of denominations including 2 000, 5 000, 10 000, 20 000, 50 000, and 100 000 pesos. The banknotes in this series were featured with the portrait of Colombia’s scientists or artists who had contributed themselves to the culture and history of Colombia. Furtherly, geographies were depicted as the country’s richness, history, and creativity.
