The history of Honduran Lempira.
The Lempira (HNL) was introduced in 1931 as Honduras' official currency. Its first official currency was the Honduran real in 1832. The Honduran real lasted about 30 years when the peso was introduced. The term Lempira derived from the war leader against the Spanish colonize.
In 1932, the banknote denomination was introduced by the Bank of Honduras. The banknotes included 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 lempiras notes. Later on, 50 and 100 lempiras notes were added, and as well as the 500 lempiras notes 5 years later.
The concept of these banknotes was similar to the Egyptian denomination. It requires a portrait of a famous person of Honduras on the facade and a place that represents the culture of Honduras.
In 2010, the 20 lempiras notes were changed to another material by polymer base.
